Village History
In 1938 the Kirk family built their beautiful home on the
edge of the Courtenay River where they lovingly cared for
their house and their spectacular gardens. This location soon
became a “home” for many social events in the
area, including weddings and entertaining. In 1973 the home
began its transformation into a restaurant. The restaurant
officially opened its doors to the public in 1974. In July
2006, the restaurant underwent renovations and reopened as
Tomãto Tomäto.
The Old House Restaurant, now known as Tomãto
Tomäto, has a reputation that spans Vancouver
Island and beyond. Chances are you know someone who has enjoyed
a meal at this beautiful location admist the idyllic gardens here
in Courtenay. When you come to visit don’t be surprised
to see Sophie, the resident Labrador Retriever, roaming the
gardens and making sure that she finds the perfect flower
bed for her afternoon nap.
The Old House Village was a vision by many involved
with the restaurant and area. It is evolving and developing
as a “village centre” to eventually include the
original restaurant, deluxe hotel accommodation, a luxury
health and medi-spa, an outdoor swimming pool and convention
facilities. The location of the village, central to absolutely
everything in the Comox Valley, provides endless opportunities
for activities and adventures.
